Welcome to The Highlands at Wyomissing, an outstanding, nonprofit continuing care retirement community (CCRC). We invite you to consider the pinnacle of retirement living.


CAMPUS

The Highlands at Wyomissing, located on 113 picturesque acres in the heart of Wyomissing, Berks County, Pennsylvania, offers a bright and inspiring setting and a lovely vista for each residence. Miles of scenic walking trails adjoining our campus provide the enjoyment of quiet walks in the woods or by the stream.

The approximately 360 residents (age 62 and older) living in the cottages and apartments at The Highlands at Wyomissing have a wide range of lifestyle options from which to choose. From studio apartments to expansive two-bedroom deluxe apartments and three-bedroom cottages, each of our 250 apartments, 38 cottages, and Farmstead offer an impressive array of features and amenities, surrounding residents with comfort, convenience, and aesthetic appeal. In addition, residents may, with approval from the Community, bring their lap-size pet into their residence.

Our campus also includes 71 Personal Care residences, 62 Medicare-certified Nursing beds, and our 18-bed Medicare-certified, cognitive care program, Heather Court.

Residents' front doors open each day to a world of opportunities to share life and experiences throughout The Highlands at Wyomissing.


SERVICES

Our tangible services include: one meal daily for apartment residents and 10 meals monthly for cottage residents; all utilities except telephone for apartment residents; light semimonthly housekeeping and thorough semiannual cleaning; weekly bath and bedroom linens for apartment residents; and regularly scheduled transportation to grocery stores, shopping malls, banks, and local doctor offices for cottage and apartment residents.

There is a 24-hour emergency response system in each residence and 24-hour security services for the entire campus. Meals are delivered to residents' residences, when approved by The Highlands at Wyomissing's Medical Director.

But every bit as real, albeit less tangible, is the "service" that spells complete confidence to every resident at The Highlands at Wyomissing. Resident surveys, which are conducted anonymously, reveal the high satisfaction residents living at The Highlands at Wyomissing have with the very capable and friendly staff that respond to residents' requests and/or inquiries with the highest degree of warmth and professionalism.

- Dining
We believe that one of the key elements in an active retirement lifestyle is directly related to the dining experience. Proper nutrition and the social interaction of breaking bread together helps to keep residents vital.

The Highlands at Wyomissing has 10 separate dining rooms ranging in size from 10 to 140 seats. Our dining rooms are open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m., serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner to accommodate the needs of our more than 500 residents. Residents are encouraged to invite family members and guests to dine with them, especially at our holiday theme and picnic events.

Room service, as well as a full range of catering services are available to meet residents' entertaining needs for breakfast, lunch, or dinner parties. We also offer cocktail parties and hors d'oeuvres, barbecues, receptions, picnics, party trays, birthday and anniversary parties, and cakes for special events. The dining rooms may be reserved for these private functions.

For those with special dietary requirements, we have dietary managers and dietitians available for consultation.

- Activities
At The Highlands at Wyomissing our interest goes beyond adding years to life as we seek to add life to years. To this end, The Highlands at Wyomissing has an extensive activity program tailored to meet the physical, intellectual, creative, and spiritual needs of our residents. This wide variety of programming is designed to enhance and promote independence and personal choice.

Fitness is a priority. In addition to our well-equipped gym and indoor swimming pool, residents enjoy exercise classes, line dancing, golfing on our driving range and putting green, bowling, gardening, shuffleboard, billiards, quoits, water aerobics, table tennis, and social dances.

Educational Enrichment and Alvernia Senior College courses provide intellectual stimulation by featuring lectures and classes by professors from local universities on many current affair topics, as well as topics in the social and physical sciences. Residents also enjoy computer classes, Public Affairs Breakfasts with community speakers in the spring and fall, and the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) safe-driving course that is offered semiannually.

The Highlands at Wyomissing has computers (with large screen monitors) that are available exclusively for residents' use. The computers have Internet access, as well as games, word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation programs. As a result, many residents have established free Internet e-mail accounts and enjoy using the Internet to communicate with their family and friends.

The Highlands at Wyomissing offers bus transportation to many local civic productions, the symphony and other concerts, lectures, and community events.

Special events include dances, outdoor band concerts, slide presentations, musical programs, and socials. Weekly movies, travelogues, card parties, and shopping trips are also enjoyed.

The Highlands at Wyomissing's activity programming also includes activities to foster creativity including quilting, knitting, woodworking, craft classes, painting, flower arranging, cooking, singing, and participating in the bell choir.

Trip destinations include New York City theatres, museums, local restaurants, cruises, the seashore, dinner theatres, New England, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and many more interesting places.

Spiritual activities enjoyed by residents include a well-attended weekly Bible study led by local ministers and rabbis. There are also hymn sings, religious musical programs, lectures, slide shows, and weekly transportation to local churches.

Residents are kept informed by the Weekly Bulletin and an in-house television station that features daily programs produced by Highlands' residents.

This abundance of activities contributes significantly to our residents' unique energy and enthusiasm.

- Housekeeping
The Highlands at Wyomissing's reputation as a premier retirement community has been earned by our commitment to excellence which is demonstrated by our 365 days a year housekeeping support program.

We sparkle and shine from one end to the other of our luxurious community. From our wonderfully carpeted corridors to the privacy of each cottage and apartment, residents see our dedicated Housekeeping staff sprucing and cleaning to guarantee the neat and stylish appearance residents expect to enjoy. From special bed making services to scheduled, routine cleaning, residents are pleased by the professional manner in which our Housekeeping staff support their cleaning needs.

Our Housekeeping Department is professionally managed by Aramark, an industry leader in support services management.

- Maintenance
When it comes to individual resident maintenance requests, replacements, remodeling, and repairs, our Maintenance staff excel. Maintenance staff are on-site 365 days a year and are available on-call 24 hours a day.

Our grand, extensive landscape, with its wonderfully spectacular scenic views, as well as our extremely well maintained buildings, echo our Maintenance staffs' commitment to ensuring that residents enjoy the finest lifestyle possible.

From hanging residents' favorite paintings in their cottages or apartments to completing a major renovation project, our Maintenance staff have the skills and expertise to get the job done right.

- Transportation
Even though our residents enjoy the independence of having their own automobiles, our Transportation staff provide transportation services to recreational events, shopping trips, and visits to residents' physician offices. In inclement weather, when traffic is too stressful, or when a medical trip is necessary, our transportation service is available on a scheduled basis from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday, except on holidays. We also provide weekend (including local church transportation) and after-hour transportation services.

Our fleet of luxurious automobiles and comfortable buses take residents where they need to go in style. And our service-oriented, professional Transportation staff know the best way to transport residents to their destinations on time and safely.

- Security
The Highlands at Wyomissing's residents enjoy the peace of mind that comes with round-the-clock security services.

The entire facility was designed with safety in mind, with its fire-resistant construction, bar-code gates to prevent cut through traffic, security cameras, and well-lighted parking lots. Additionally, all cottages and apartments have a state-of-the-art smoke detection and sprinkler system, which immediately notifies the Security staff in the event of an emergency.

Moreover, all cottages and apartments have an emergency call system in the bedrooms and bathrooms which can be activated should the need arise. The emergency call systems are supported by a fully trained Emergency Response Team, which is on duty 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Residents can also rest assured knowing that a staff member checks their cottages and apartments daily to ensure that all is well.

- Health and Wellness
The Highlands at Wyomissing values the health and wellness of all residents and is committed to provide the opportunity for each resident to enhance the quality of their life. Our emphasis is on the preservation of health and wellness, while respecting each resident's right to determine their own desire for health care. We view health and wellness as a combination of physical, mental, and social well being.

There is a Health and Wellness suite where preventative programs and advice are offered, such as lectures on various physical and mental health topics, blood pressure clinics, health fairs, as well as the availability of educational materials such as videos, pamphlets, and books on various health related topics. A wide variety of community resources are also available.

The Health and Wellness office is staffed 365 days a year with dedicated, professional nurses. The Resident Services staff provide support to the Health and Wellness nurses to ensure that each resident's health and wellness needs are met. The Health and Wellness nurses and the Resident Services staff also participate on an interdepartmental team that assesses the appropriate level of care of each resident.

Other services available through the Health and Wellness office include:
- Emergency and non-emergency access to a professional nurse 24 hours a day.
- Forty-eight (48) hour managed care in each resident's cottage or apartment after returning from the hospital or a higher level of care.
- Assistance with completing each resident's Elder Alert information (i.e., emergency information that all residents are asked to keep in an orange tube in their refrigerator).
- Therapy services are provided in our well-equipped, on-site Rehabilitation Department. The major goal of the Rehabilitation Department is to promote functional independence, maintain wellness, and prevent disabilities of residents. Physical, occupational, and speech therapy services are available on an inpatient basis to Nursing residents and on an outpatient basis to other Highlands' residents.
- Daily laboratory courier services from an affiliated hospital.
- Room meal service, when medically approved.
- Medical transportation.
- Annual flu vaccine clinics.
- Assistance with arranging for Home Health Care services.

Healthcare services are provided in our Personal Care, Nursing Care, and Rehabilitation departments.
