Offering many amenities in our rent-subsidized, equal opportunity housing apartments, Lutherwood boasts a scenic wooded setting with a breathtaking view of Lake Scranton-all at a price you can afford.
Location. Location. Location.
Situated on the outskirts of Scranton, Pa., Lutherwood is located in a peaceful setting, with urban amenities just minutes away. Downtown Scranton boasts various cultural, educational, and recreational offerings including the Scranton Cultural Center, the Mellow Center, the Northeast Philharmonic, Nay Aug Park, Steamtown Mall, Steamtown USA National Park, Lackawanna Stadium, Marywood University, Lackawanna Community College, and the University of Scranton. Additional popular destinations-the Viewmont Mall and Montage Mountain-are also nearby.
Health care is readily available, as Scranton houses the Community Medical Center, Moses Taylor Hospital, and Mercy Hospital. The facilities provide care to people of all ages.
Lutherwood's prime location also allows residents to reap the benefits of a peaceful scenic campus. Lake Scranton not only provides a breathtaking backdrop for the facility, but also, for those who enjoy exercise, the setting for walking trails. The wooded landscape allows for shaded summer picnics and serves as a perfect place to gather with friends to play shuffleboard or horseshoes. Lutherwood is readily accessible from a number of major highways including Interstate-81, Rt. 307, and the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.
Embrace Your Independence!
If you are 62 years of age or older or physically handicapped and 18 years of age or older, our fair-market housing facility offers equal opportunities for all applicants who meet the current income limits.
Lutherwood provides a safe and secure environment, with regularly scheduled trips to shopping destinations, via Lutherwood's handicapped-accessible minibus. Hourly public bus transportation is also available to residents. In addition, residents may choose to participate in a variety of social activities planned by the Residents' Association, an organized group of Lutherwood residents.
A Tradition of Care
In the early 1980s, the former Lutheran Welfare Service of Northeastern Pennsylvania recognized a need for low-income senior housing in the Scranton area. Securing funding to make this mission possible, LWS purchased the current site of Lutherwood and began construction of the multi-level senior apartment complex. In 1983, Lutherwood opened its doors to qualifying individuals. Now part of Diakon Lutheran Social Ministries, Lutherwood continues a heritage of care for people dating to the Civil War era!
