Foulkeways at Gwynedd was the first Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) in Pennsylvania and the first Quaker CCRC in the United States when it opened in 1967. We continue to reflect the Quaker ideals of friendship, dignity and respect while providing financial constancy and stability as we celebrate our 40th Anniversary.

Foulkeways has joined with hundreds of other aging services providers, nationwide, to sign The American Association of Homes & Services for the Aging (AAHSA) Quality First Covenant. Participants pledge to concentrate on cultivating and nourishing an environment of continuous quality improvement, openness and leadership and are dedicated to the philosophy of quality in all areas of senior living. By adopting the Quality First Covenant, Foulkeways publicly renews it’s commitment to helping older adults and their loved ones live their lives to the fullest potential. Be sure to look for this commitment to excellence where ever senior services are available.

Our community is enriched by the diversity of residents and staff. In addition, our admissions policies are governed by non-discrimination on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, disability, sexual orientation, or economic resources. In other words, all are welcome at Foulkeways.

One of the many comforts of living at Foulkeways Continuing Care Retirement Community is the knowledge that you will receive the highest level of quality health care, regardless of your changing needs. And should those needs include assisted living or skilled nursing care, you will receive the care you require in either Abington House or Gwynedd House located on the Foulkeways campus.

The following highlights are also a part of our continuing care contract:

COMMUNITY LIFE

From the first moment you step inside the Foulkeways Community Center, you'll feel the warmth and friendliness of the engaging lifestyle that exists here. As comfortable as home, yet designed to host scores of activities and events, this is one spot where you'll experience the full sense of community in all its vibrancy. Whether its catching up with old or new friends, taking an art class, dining casually or elegantly, or just picking up your mail, the Community Center is the place where residents meet for information, intellectual stimulation, and social recreation.

The Foulkeways Residents Association, of which all residents are members, is one of the dynamic aspects of our community. The FRA is self-governing and provides countless opportunities for residents to organize and participate in a variety of programs. From planning community-wide events to preserving the environment, each committee of the FRA plays an important part in the overall synergy of our community. Here are a few examples of the activities that residents arrange for and enjoy:

- Weekly musical performances by talented artists
- Current issues discussions with professional speakers
- The Foulkeways Bulletin, a resident newsletter
- Lobby Art Show, featuring diverse artists each month
- Theater and concert trips to Philadelphia and New York
- A well-stocked fiction and non-fiction library
- The Barn, a popular shopping/antiquing place right on campus
- Fresh flowers beautifully arranged by residents
- Special programs, like Halloween and Valentines' Day shows
- Recycling and conservation programs
- Greenhouse gardening and grounds beautification

Your family pets are always welcome at Foulkeways, too. In fact, our Foulkeways dogs and cats and fish and birds are such an enjoyable part of community life that several of them are featured each month in The Foulkeways Bulletin.

Whether you're enjoying a variety of cultural entertainment and enrichment programs or a casual conversation with an ever-changing spectrum of interesting dinner table companions, life at Foulkeways provides abundant opportunities to continue to learn and grow.

Activities

There are innumerable facets of fun and enjoyment, arts and culture, gamesmanship and craftsmanship that are woven into the diverse fabric of our community. The interests that residents bring with them to Foulkeways have paved the way for a variety of activities available to all residents.

Each week, on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. in the Foulkeways auditorium, residents are treated to an ever-changing venue of high quality music, dance, drama and other forms of entertainment performed by prominent musicians, dancers and other artists. Thanks to the hardworking members of the Foulkeways Residents Association Performing Arts Committee, residents can experience outstanding performances by members of the Philadelphia Orchestra, The Curtis Institute of Music, The Juilliard School, The Temple School of Music, Astral Youth Artists, The Settlement Music School and other well-known sources of excellence. One of 110 committees that make up the Foulkeways Residents Association, the Performing Arts Committee is comprised entirely of resident volunteers who donate countless hours of their time and energy to insure a diverse schedule of performances. Rarely are residents of retirement communities treated to performing arts of this caliber without having to travel to major cities and universities.

Strategy and competition combined with a keen eye and countless hours of practice, make Wimbledon (British croquet) one of the favored sports here at Foulkeways. Played year-round, indoors out outdoors, resident players are spirited competitors on their home turf and during tournament play at nearby retirement communities. Whether player or spectator, this is one game not to be missed.

Wimbledon not your game? Then check out some of the other activities that are offered as part of the active lifestyle here at Foulkeways:

Connecting With Kids

For those who enjoy interacting with children, there are several opportunities right on campus.

Foulkeways has a Child Care Center located on the lower level of the Community Center and many delight in seeing the energetic children coming and going throughout the day. Residents are welcome to read to the children, help with art projects or accompany them on walks. The Center’s intergenerational programs also include visits and activities with residents living in our health care facilities, Abington House, our Assisted Living facility, and Gwynedd House, our Skilled Nursing Care facility.

Residents are invited to participate in a Pen Pal program with third-graders from a local elementary school. In addition to exchanging letters they also visit each other and enjoy special times together such as pool parties, tours of apartments, and picnic at Foulkeways.

Computers are fun! Just ask any of the 4th and 5th graders who come from Abington Friends School, with their teacher, to show residents how to use email and surf the web. Residents learn computer lingo and enjoy the interaction with their computer-savvy new friends, who call their trainees Cyberfoulkes.

Foulkeways residents enjoy choosing from a variety of dining venues:

The elegant Dining Rooms in the Community Center and Abington House offer fine dining, a carving station, enticing buffets, and a weekly Chef's Special. Our youthful wait staff creates a delightful atmosphere that seems to energize residents. With no assigned seating, dinner table conversation is always engaging as residents can dine with different folks every night.

Stop in for a quick breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the casual Coffee Shop. The irresistible aroma of cinnamon rolls pulls many in for breakfast, even if it is just for a cup of coffee and bagel. Made to order sandwiches, an ever-changing salad bar, and hot entrees are lunchtime favorites.

Want to stay in and watch an old movie on TV with some friends? Take out service is perfect for those times when you can't make it to dinner or when you just want to dine in.

As a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, our Executive Chef brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as he leads the culinary team in providing a wonderful variety of foods and flavors for residents to enjoy.

A Registered Dietician is on staff to provide assistance to anyone with special diet needs, and the Foulkeways Pro-Health Dining Program offers daily low cholesterol, low-fat, low sodium entrée choices.

The talented culinary staff can also cater special affairs for holidays or other celebrations. Choose from among several parlors or larger rooms in which to host your special event and relax as your selected entrees are expertly prepared, set up and served to your specifications.
